There are many outdoor places were you can pick up; no matter how safe they may look, you should never let down your guard. Many of these places are scenes of muggings, robbery by intimidation, assaults, and exceptionally homicides. The majority of such crimes are not reported, to avoid having to explain the police where and in what context they occurred. This hinders the police ability to catch the criminals, who take advantage of their impunity and carry on committing crimes. Having sex in a public place is not illegal by Spanish legislation (unless such acts are witnessed by minors).
Keep in mind the below recommendations:
-
If you are a first-timer, take a friend who knows the area and the dynamics with you. It might be good if you could familiarise yourself with the place in the daytime.
-
Carry your own condoms, lub or any item you may need; this will avoid uncomfortable unsafe sex situations. Once these are used, pick them up and dispose of them in the nearest rubbish bin, or keep them on you until you get home.
-
Memorise the access points and have a look round before picking up; this way you will know how to act in any situation. Remember it will be harder to call for help or alert someone if you choose an isolated or hidden area.
-
If you visit a place often, try to have a chat with people there, as they could help you in case of danger.
-
If you have drunk or taken drugs, do drive to get to the place. If you are involved in an accident and take the alcohol test, you car will be confiscated and points will be taken off your driving licence. Also your decision-making will be diminished when it comes to confronting violent situations or negotiating sex.
-
Do not show off any valuables, cards, money or mobile phones: the latter might keep you from being assaulted. You should not carry any valuables with you, expect for your ID, driving licence and your mobile phone.
-
If you are listening to music in your car or wearing headphones, your sense of danger is diminished.
-
If you travel by public transport and delay your return, you might end up being stuck in the cruising area.
-
If you notice changes in the area, i.e. different people, or you begin to feel unsafe, switch places for a while.
-
In case the police requests to see your ID, etc., co-operate politely; they are there to help us and ensure we remain safe.
-
If you experience abuse by private security staff in a public place, do not confront them, report it; use your mobile phone and call the police. They cannot do anything about that.
-
In case of danger, shout, “HELP, POLICE, HELP” ("AYUDA. POLICIA. AYUDA") repeatedly or call 112.
-
You must report any type of assault or attack, whether you are the victim or a witness. Remember you are not expected to report any details (i.e. your sexual practices, which are legal in themselves); you only have to report criminal offences.
-
Be discreet, and remember there are non-gay by-passers in the area. Keep the place clean, take your rubbish with you, respect the neighbours.
